They’re not doing one type of content. They’re doing all of it.
Static posts. Carousels. Articles. Video. Behind the scenes. Talking to camera. All of it. Mixed up. Strategic.
Because your audience doesn’t all consume content the same way. Some people read. Some people watch. Some people scroll carousels on the bus. Some people need to see your face and hear your voice before they’ll ever pick up the phone.
So give them all of it.
But there’s one piece most business owners are still not doing. And it’s the one that changes everything.
Building a personal brand.
Not a separate thing from your business. Not an ego project. Your personal brand as the business owner is the single most powerful thing you can do to lift your business brand. People don’t connect with logos. They connect with people. When you show up as the face behind the business, when you share your thinking and your opinions and what you stand for, trust in you becomes trust in your business. Enquiries come in because someone watched a video and felt like they already knew you. Referrals come easier because people remember a person, not a business name. Your personal brand makes your business brand bigger. It gives it a heartbeat.
So how do you actually do it?
Here’s where most people get stuck. They think video means tips. “Five things you need to know about…” or “Here’s how to choose the right…” and look, that stuff has its place. But it’s not what builds a personal brand. Everyone’s doing that. It blends in.
Here’s what actually cuts through.
Talk about the time you almost quit. The real version. Not the polished comeback story. The 2am sitting-on-the-floor version. The moment you genuinely didn’t know if you’d keep going. People don’t connect with your success. They connect with the fact that you nearly didn’t make it and you kept going anyway.
Film yourself doing the actual work. Not a “day in the life” montage with a trending audio. Just you, doing the thing, talking while you do it. A builder on site explaining why they chose that particular fix. A florist prepping a wedding order at 5am talking about the pressure. A consultant scribbling on a whiteboard working through a real problem. The mundane stuff is the stuff people can’t stop watching because it’s real.
Say the thing nobody in your industry will say. Every industry has unspoken truths. The thing everyone knows but nobody posts about because it might ruffle feathers. Say it. That’s the video that gets shared. That’s the one people screenshot and send to their mates saying “finally someone said it.”
Read one of your reviews on camera and tell the story behind it. Not just “look at this nice review.” Pull it up, read it out, and then tell people what was actually happening behind the scenes on that job. The chaos. The pressure. What nearly went wrong. That turns a five-star review into a story people remember.
Talk about a client you said no to. Not to be dramatic. Just be straight about why you turned the work down and what that says about how you run your business. That tells people more about your values in sixty seconds than your About page ever will.
Show the bit before the highlight reel. The early alarm. The cold coffee. The school run then straight to site. The spreadsheets at 9pm. The stuff nobody posts because it’s not pretty. That’s the content that makes someone think “this person is real. I trust them.”
Share a question a customer asked that you get all the time and give your unfiltered answer. Not the diplomatic version. The version you’d give a mate.
Talk about what you’d do completely differently if you were starting your business again tomorrow. People love this because it’s honest and it’s useful and nobody else is saying it.
None of this needs a script. None of it needs editing. Pick up your phone, hit record, talk for sixty seconds. Post it.
Mix it in with everything else you’re already doing. Keep your static content. Keep your carousels. Keep your written posts. But add you into the mix. Your face. Your voice. Your take.
Start with one a week. Then build from there. It doesn’t have to be polished. It has to be you.
Your personal brand and your business brand aren’t competing. One feeds the other. The stronger you show up as the person behind the business, the more your business grows.
The owners who get this are already doing it. They’re showing up. Being real. Mixing video in with everything else. And their businesses are the ones people remember.
Start now. Start rough. Start before you’re ready. Your audience is waiting to hear from you. Not your logo. You.
